Oyase Community School

What is Oyase Community School?

OYASE (Oh-yah-see) is a nature based outdoor program for children and teens. Oyase is influenced by native mentoring techniques and modern naturalist studies to help students ground themselves in nature, discover their talents and learn to be comfortable in nature. Students study tracking, native scout skills, edible plants, ecological relationships, firemaking, lostproofing, survival skills, tree identification and other naturalist skills.

Much of the staff's work is on a deeper level than is initially apparent...one of the older students had an "ah-ha" experience and phrased it: "I get it...questions are not just something that come before answers, but a tool for increasing your awareness...". The students spend most of the day outdoors. They build shelters for their group/clan to use during the day and have a large natural shelter where all gather for the afternoon fire and storytime.
