Oyase Community School

A Dynamic Learning “Village” in the Woods

"We were camping in main, in a remote part of a deserted campground. We were by the ocean, and night was falling. In the foggy twilight, we walked to the outhouse, me and my two boys. On the way, our flashlight's batteries gave out, and we were walking in the almost dark. I was feeling a little spooked.

Then my son said to me, "This is the time of day I love the best!"

"Why do you say that?" I asked.

"Because it's so dark, and you can hide really well," he said. "I feel at one with the night."

It struck me then that, besides all the great skills and stories and techniques my kids learn at Oyase, they learn something far more important. They learn to be at home in the world." --2011 Parent
